IMPROVING STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH DEBATE TECHNIQUE

ABSTRAK

Speaking is important due to speaking is a way of communicating with everyone to convey opinions and ideas, but in reality students' English speaking skill are low. This is due to some problems, those problems are vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar also fluency that have to be mastered by students so that they can speak well. The researchers applied the debate technique in helping students to improve their speaking skill. This study was a classroom action research conducted into two rounds. The data would be collected through tests and observations. Test and observation data collected from each round were subjected to quantitative and qualitative analysis. Debate's technique used to test students’ speaking skill at second grade students of SMA Mulia Pratama Medan was carried out in two rounds, including round one and round two. 25 students of class XI IPA participated in the study. The results gave increase score that the use of debate technique successfully gave good progress in improving students' speaking skill. It was evidenced from students' scores, which got increased with each round. At the first round, students’ score was 42.50, at the second round it was 78.22. Data finding of this research was useful information, especially for English teacher and for all English teachers in general to help their students to improve speaking’s skill through debate technique.
