ABSTRAK

The kidneys are important organs that help to maintain the composition of blood by preventing the build-up of waste products. The exposure to hydrocarbons plays an important role in the development of renal dysfunction especially benzene. Syzygium Polyanthum with secondary metabolites that contains antioxidants and it has the ability to neutralizing benzene toxicity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the ability of Ethanolic Extract of Syzygium Polyanthum (EESP) to prevent the kidney damage after benzene exposure. This study was divided into 11 groups of normal, benzene 3, benzene 6, vitamin C 3, vitamin C 6, EESP 400 3, EESP 400 6, EESP 600 3, EESP 600 6 EESP 800 3 and EESP 800 6 and given for 21 days, on the 22nd day the rats were dissected. The obtained blood was centrifuged at 5000 RPM for 15 minutes. Furthermore, the supernatant was taken and the parameters were analyzed for urea, creatinine, uric acid, and NGAL. The results showed that the EESP doses of 400, 600, and 800 mg/kgbw could reduced the levels of urea, creatinine, uric acid and NGAL which were statiscically significant different from the group that was only given benzene 3 and 6 (p< 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that the EESP has the nephroprotective activity
