ABSTRAK

Streptococcus mutans is a pathogenic bacteria and the main etiology of dental caries. These bacteria interact with carbohydrates for a long time and form acids which lower the pH and cause demineralization. So we need an action to prevent dental caries with natural antibacterial ingredients, one of which is cat whiskers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the antibacterial effectiveness of cat whiskers leaf extract (Orthosiphon stamineus) concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125% against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. This type of research is experimental laboratory with posttest only control group design in vitro. The study population was Streptococcus mutans bacteria. This study consisted of 6 treatment groups with the sample size determined using the Federer formula and 4 replications for each group. The data was collected by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone using a shear caliper. Then, the data were analyzed with oneway ANOVA and posthoc LSD statistical tests. Based on the results of the study, it was stated that the mean diameter of the antibacterial inhibition zone of cat whiskers leaf extract (Orthosiphon stamineus) with a concentration of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125% against Streptococcus mutans bacteria was 11.50 ± 0.38 mm, 10.78 ± 0.22 mm, 9.90 ± 0.13 mm, 9.10 ± 0.08 mm and 8.25 ± 0.25 mm, while the negative control in this study, namely DMSO, had no inhibitory diameter (0 mm). From the results of the study it can be concluded that there is an antibacterial effectiveness of cat whiskers leaf extract (Orthosiphon stamineus) against Streptococcus mutans bacteria.
